SEAS Prestige 27TDC (H1149) Textile Dome Tweeter- 6 ohm
Like the H1189 but without ferrofluid. High Definition pre-coated fabric dome tweeter with a wide, soft polymer surround and a rear chamber.
Sonotex precoated fabric diaphragm with high consistency and excellent stability against variations in air humidity. Sonomax surround for low resonance, excellent mechanical linearity and stability without magnetic fluid damping. The voice coil is wound on an aluminium voice coil former with adequate ventilating holes to eliminate noise from internal air flow. Stiff and stable rear chamber with optimal acoustic damping allows the tweeter to be used with moderately low crossover frequencies. The chassis is precision moulded from glass fibre reinforced plastic, and its front design offers optimum radiation conditions.
I used them to replace 23 year old Sonus Faber Grand Piano Home tweeters (TWE00007). Full setup is wiim pro>>ares ii>>sa-9100 (as preamp)>>aegir>>sonus fabers.
I had first started with Scanspeak 9220s, which were brilliant most of the time, but unfortunately had high distortion with certain music in my setup, see those tweeters for separate review.
So next decided to try SEAS. Was looking at the 1189s, but saw a forum post where someone had used various SEAS tweeters including the 1189s and he said 1149s were his favorite soft domes of all time. Also, 1149s don't use ferrofluid and I suspected the ferrofluid failed on the old tweeters, as the voice coil was rubbing on one side ???
I didn't even break the SEAS in, just started comparing out of the box, swapping both sets of tweeters in and out. It took 3-4 hours for image to focus on the SEAS, after that they were already better than the Scanspeaks. The SEAS could handle everything and played clear and distortion free for me at max 90db at 2 meters. Can't vouch for louder.
They are everything I want and expect from a soft dome. "Right" mix of non-fatiguing dynamics, detail and smoothness. Pointed at my shoulders, they roll off very nicely in-room with no craziness. Brought new life to my speakers.
Off chance any one looking to replace the TWE00007, remove the old surrounds and drill and screw the new tweeters to the old surrounds, face to face (Make sure to drill through the old surrounds, not the new ones!). Then use the old surrounds as a template to grind the new surrounds using an oscillating grinder or router. Can get a portable grinder for $50 and clamp it to a table/counter. Take your time.
