Seas A26RE4 (H1411) Classic 10" Paper Cone Woofer

The A26RE4 is the modern version of the once popular 25F-EW woofer used in the Dynaco A25 system.  Seas has stopped using the old 25cm frame and now uses the 26cm frame.  This new woofer will not fit in the Dynaco A25 speaker, as the frame is 10.59" overall diameter.

This classic paper cone has a wonderful roll off at 2000Hz.  This is one of the only 10" drivers we know of that could be used in a 2-way by letting the woofer run full range without a crossover.  I have heard this woofer with the Seas 27TDFC (H1189) tweeter and it had a magical retro sound to it.

  • Overall diameter 269 mm
  • Cutout diameter 232.2 mm
  • Flange thickness  5.8 mm
  • Depth  100.5 mm
  • Suggested Sealed Box: 1.5 cubic feet with 50% filling, F3 about 48Hz.

  • A classical paper cone and matching natural rubber surround produce a smooth response and reduce potential resonance problems.
  • A four layer voice coil provides a well behaved roll off characteristic.
  • The magnet system has a T-shaped cross section of the pole piece for low modulation distortion.
  • Extremely stiff and stable injection molded metal basket keeps the critical components in perfect alignment. Large windows in the basket both above and below the spider reduce sound reflection, air flow noise and cavity resonance to a minimum.

Amazing woofer
TS Parameters tells us that it's better to use this woofer in sealed box, but I decided to install these drivers in relatively small 35 liter cabinets each equiped by one ScanSpeak Flow Resistor. This woofer can give low, fast and clean bass in combination with surprisingly (for 10 inch size) detailed and "live" midrange. And you get dynamic range of big woofers. You can trust manufacturer data, the response is flat with smooth roll off until 2 kHz, so using of simple crossover shematic will give good result. But if you take care about little peak at 1600 kHz, you'll get much-much higher level of performance. The only problem is high voice coil inductivity. So my crossover is rather complicate, but I have no regrets about time spent for searching of right combination, I really enjoyed the result. I wonder how this driver can play the music! Magic sound, I confirm it.

I used this speaker in a two way system with a Seas 27TDFC tweeter. The bass crossover includes a series 1.5mh air core inductor. The speaker is in parallel with a 4.7uf capacitor. The cabinet is sealed and about 2 square feet. The cone easily produces clean bass at 30hz and extension out to 2k without break up. They sound good with Telarc recordings as well as Rory Gallagher or Stevie Ray Vaughn. Pianos are reproduced with full weight and horns sound accurate. Most of all they sound like music.
