Great for HT and Music
The sound is really impressive. They have a really clear sound; when using them as HT speakers the dialog in the movies is so much easier to hear. I used to have to turn movies up in the quiet parts and down in the loud parts to be able to hear the dialog but not anymore.
I built these as gifts but broke them in on my system in place of a pair of B&W CM5 speakers. The CM5 speakers are about 5 times the price and while these don't match them they do come surprisingly close. In fact, if I had these before buying the B&W speakers I don't think I would have been looking at speakers at all. Going an entire weekend with these I never once noticed anything missing.
I'm building another set to keep and then I'm going to attempt the SR71s
Smooth!
Fantastic!
A few tips:
Do follow Johns advice EXACTLY -Keep the speakers away from the wall, use a sub, keep the same box dimensions, etc.
Do spend some time on Johns website - There is a lot of good information on Zaphaudio. Read it, heaven forbid you may learn something.
Do use high resolution audio files- You will finally be able to hear poorly compressed audio.
Do buy from Madi- They have always done great, shipping has been speedy, their kits are awesome. I did once email for customer service and the issue quickly became a nonissue.
ZA5.2 Outstanding
I can not help loving these loudspeakers. I made two pairs, one for tv and one for my special design powered by car radio in a small summer cottage. Both are so clear and transparent. I really recommend to everybody who loves speakers with excellent mid and high sound and clear spoken voice. Anyone who likes to have a good sound in tv, these are the speakers you are looking for! Small size but great and clear sound - perfect for tv speakers integrated with small D-class amplifier and connected to headphone terminal as I did. Then in most cases (like samsung, sony tv's) the remote control will control the sound pressure.
Those bass lovers who needs strong and high pressure bass sound, these are good in normal voice pressure and even louder, but you may need then subwoofer. This is not a big issue but the size of the speakers sets its limits.
Actually these were second and third speakers from John's design. They all are way better than I expected and with the bargain price. Thanks also Madisound for caring my shipment. I am living in Europe (Finland) - so overseas is not problem.
I would like to give 10 stars, but only 5 is available!
review
it is one of the clearest and uncolored bookshelves i ever heard
no problem in all range
thank you John
if you want to add sub, coose light weight mms drivers, like SEAS Prestige L26RFX/P (H1209), in sealed box
Astonishing Sound
This is my first set of DIYs and hardly ever going back to retail. I live outside the US and did not get the enclosures, so I had to build them myself. Great experience as first timer. All was guided by Zaph's page. Let the man guide you. He knows better. I built the front stage of my HT (center channel ZA5.3). Integration is awesome and seamless. In stereo (no center channel). image and soundstage are exceptional. Great detail, smooth transients, crystal clear highs. Very good low-end, though a subwoofer is more than welcome. After having used many different brands (JBL, Boston Acoustics, Yamaha), I finally hear great detail from reasonably priced speakers. These babies are keepers. Even a second pair is on its way to get it for my parent's living room. I will recommend these speakers to anyone who wants to have great sound without having to break the bank. Also going for a DIY subwoofer to make things even better. Future plans include a tower system using the same drivers. Thanks Madisound for putting all stuff together.
Wow!
I don't know why, but I still prefer the sound of my floor standing two way system for pure music listening. This probably has more to do with placement of the speakers more than anything.
My boxes are made to specified internal dimensions using 3/4" MDF and a 3 mm laminated layer of Lyptus. Rear surrounds are ceiling mounted ~11' from the center listening position in horizontal orientation, with the tweeters away from the walls. I have an odd shaped room with vaulted ceilings, so standing waves are not an issue. Front channels are 5' off the ground and rather close to the wall. I worried about these non-ideal placements for too long - and for very little purpose. Any improvements to be had by placing these speakers differently would be significantly outweighed by the realities every day life and the multi-purpose use of this room. Build em, place them reasonably close to where they should be, let the receiver tune out the delays, relax and enjoy...

Crisp highs, and remarkable low end. I would highly recommend.
