CHN-50 3" Magnesium Alloy Cone Full Range- 103mm- 4 ohm
CHN-50 3" Magnesium Alloy Cone Full Range- 103mm- 4 ohm
Fantastic little driver for small sealed box / nearfield use, better sound quality than consumer drivers.
The CHN-50 is an affordable new compact 3" drive unit suitable for use in small nearfield loudspeakers, as a quality mid-tweeter for low-crossover multiway designs, and for array applications. We have built a gentle rise into the low and high frequency response, as seen in some of our more expensive drive units, to enhance positioning flexibility. The sound presentation is forgiving, without glare, and the Thiele / Small parameters, with a generous 3.5mm (1-way) Xmax are balanced for ease of use.
The low-mass voice coil, suspension and shallow profile magnesium alloy cone are unique designs for the CHN-50. The pressed steel frame is designed to be very open and allow airflow to be as free as possible to the rear of the cone. Response extends from resonance to beyond 20KHz, and the impedance rise at higher frequencies is only
modest, due to the careful motor design.
Also available for purchase in the MarkAudio Tozzi One 3" Full Range Speaker Kit!
Suggested Box
Small to medium sized speakers are usually lower power designs. The power rating is given in the technical data for each audio driver. For a reliable long service life, please operate your new speakers with care. For the first 100 hours, operate them at very low volumes. After this period, gradually increase the volume to a normal listening level. If you see the cone of the speakers making large movements, immediately turn the volume down. This will protect the speaker and your human hearing from damage. Factory mechanical defects for a period of 1 year. Excessive hard use (over-driving) and other damage caused during customer use is excluded from our warranty.

CHN-50 + Minimus 7 = !!!

Like others, I bought -- and love -- the Tozzi One kit. I also have three pairs of the Realistic Minimus 7s many of you will be familiar with: One pair with an upgraded crossover (not the Zilch, though); one pair still stock; and one pair (Optimus Pro 7AVs, actually) stock but with one damaged woofer.
You can guess where this is heading. I asked Madisound (Josh, to be specific) if converting the 7AVs to full-range desktop speakers was worth a try, given that the 7s' cabinets are smaller than the Tozzi One cabinets. He said it was, and he also recommended low-pass filters for my cheap Realistic subwoofer driver (in an undersized, homemade cabinet).
I had to make adapter baffles for the 7s to both cover the tweeter hole and to create the right-sized holes for the 3-inch CHN-50s, as compared to the original 4-inch woofers. This sort of detailed cutting and drilling is not my forte (a real woodworker or 3D-printer owner could easily do better), but it turned out fine.
The results sound fantastic. I don't have hardcore audiophile ears, and I don't have equipment to measure frequency responses. I'm just a low-budget music lover who gets a thrill from stereos that deliver detailed resolution and imaging. They sound much better to me than the upgraded 7s I was previously happy with.
I recommend this conversion to anyone with Minimus 7 (or similar) boxes that deserve a rebirth.

I’m using these in the Markaudio Tozzi One kits and am enjoying them more than any speaker I’ve had. How can they produce this sound for the price.
Amazing

I've been involved in High End Audio in some way for 30 years. Heard just about everything at some point. This is without any question the most shockingly good speaker driver I have ever heard. I have designed and built 3 different boxes, and made 6 pairs. In a good box, these keep up with just about any speakers in the $2,000 to $10,000 range. Pure, dynamic, smooth, and surprisingly high output. Not quite as smooth and refined sounding as the Alpairs, but there is a slight, horn like, dynamic quality these have that may make some prefer them over the Alpairs. I tested a pair in my 9 person home theater thinking they wouldn't be big enough to fill the room. I was wrong. They lacked punch, but the fact two cones this sized filled that room blew me away.
They seem to like spherical boxes, and going the extra mile to make a stiff and damp enclosure is totally worth the effort. You can easily spend 10k on amp/source and the speakers still wouldn't be the weak link. Pair these with an Aiyima amp and the Apple Lightning to 3.5mm adapter DAC and you may have the best bang for your buck audio system in history.
I made a pair of undersized sealed boxes and they sound very good. There is a little less low end but there is some magic there, and they are tiny.
Most will want to pair this with a good sub. It could be livable in a ported enclosure for classical/acoustic music for some people.
I only gave these 5 stars because I couldn't give them 6.
