MiniDSP 2x4 Rev B / 2Vrms Digital Signal Processor
Now includes free redemption code for plug-in, a $10 value!
*Used in the Linkwitz LXmini Speaker Kit*
A low cost Digital Signal Processor for audio applications. Great sound in a tiny package.
The miniDSP 2x4 in a box is a flexible pocket size DSP processor with 2 x analog IN, 4 x analog OUT. Combined with a plug-in software for programming, one can configure the on board Audio processing filters real time from a PC or Mac environment. Once the board configured, the device operates standalone and doesn't require a computer anymore. For more information on potential applications, the miniDSP website.

Wow!
This is a very good deal in a fixed architecture processor that offers plenty of programmable options, including multi-band parametric EQ and various filter alignments up to 48dB/Oct. If you are an audio professional or even an advanced hobbyist, you should have no problem configuring this unit. I was going to design-build a tube-based crossover for my system and bought this for experimentation with crossover frequencies and slopes. Much to my surprise, the quality is so good I may end up just keeping this in place.
For pro applications, they make a balanced I/O version apparently not stocked by Madisound but available through the MiniDSP website. Also some bare board versions. Unfortunately freight from Hong Kong does drive up the price. Madisound is the best deal for the models they have in stock.
A Totally Game-Changing product
Amplifiers are cheap so this unit gives you the ability to deal with all kinds of difficulties in speaker design with ease. You get notch filters with variable frequency and Q, shelf filters, and multiple crossover slopes with level controls and time delay. This unit also allows you to sum the bass channels to mono.
I designed a 2-way system that would have been quite difficult to implement with passive filters, it worked very easily with this unit. Plus I was able to make an actively assisted 6th order bass reflex, with ability to sculpt low end response and out-of-band protection with tremendous precision.
Active system design is in such easy reach now, since everybody has an extra amplifier or receiver on hand. You can buy a new or used amp often for $100-200 or less - so even the audiophile on a shoestring budget can design kickass systems.
This has other interesting applications. It can be an active equalizer (similar to what Bose does in its 802 and 901 systems), and the 5 volt USB power works at home or in your car. You use the software on your computer to build the filters, load the configuration into the unit, unplug and go.
Eventually the world is going to catch on to this. Totally game changing.
