The Ara is a 2-way stand-mount speaker kit based on the top line of Satori drivers and was designed by the Danish SB engineering team. It is the smaller brother of the Rinjani 2.5-way with same design concept: to deliver transparent and dynamic sound reproduction.

The gently faceted top corner shape is specially angled to reduce high frequency diffraction and yields superb imaging qualities. 7⁰ inclined baffle slope helps time align the drivers, allowing for a relatively simple crossover design that delivers impressive sound staging. The wedge shaped inner rear walls behind the midwoofers reduce reflections, while the inclined bottom diminishes standing waves. All the cabinet panels are cut from 18mm MDF with internal bracing to distribute cabinet vibrations evenly and hence lower sound coloration.

The Ara kit comes with everything required to build a stereo pair of speakers. The cabinets are completely assembled and have a premium high gloss finish. The driver holes are precision cut for flush mounting of the tweeters and woofers. A rear port is built in, and the back is cut for the included terminal plate with binding posts. Internal damping material and driver mounting hardware is included. The crossovers are even pre-wired and terminated with slide on quick connects for the drivers. The crossover input wires are pre-tinned for a quick solder to the binding posts. Assembly from there can be completed with a screwdriver or drill. Assembly instructions are included.

High gloss orange or red cabinets are available by special order. Lead time is about 4 months.

I started building kits in the '70s with speakerlab products. I no longer have a woodshop so having cabinets available is a plus. This is not the first kit or only kit that I have bought from Madisound. Their service has been excellent. Now to the Ara Be kit. The fit and finish of the gloss black cabinets are on par with the B&W 705s2 that I own. They integrate very well with bass cabinets. Lower volume dynamics and soundstage are better than the Dali Epicon 2 or Dynaudio Heritage Specials. The Ara equals them in the ability to go loud. Clarity is also excellent. Using them with CSS bass cabinets, active crossover at 200hz with a pair of Coda No.8 amplifiers. Outstanding value.

I built my first speaker in 1990. Since then, I have built over 12 sets of speakers and numerous boom boxes. More notable “highly respected” designs include the Zaph ZD5, Troels CSM, and Troels Amish. I also, have built the Seas Embla, and Seas Loki 2 kits. My favorite so far is the Zaph ZD5 even though they are very inefficient speakers. With a sub to supplement deep bass, they are spectacular!

The Satori Ara are up they with the ZD5. I have only listened for 2 days, buy already put them at the top of the list! Fit and finish is excellent. I am using a sub crossed over at 50Hz, and the “basic” tweeter not the Beryllium one. System is comprised of Bluesound NODE -> Schiit Yggdrasil -> Parasound JC2 - > Pass XA25. The added efficiency and the 4-ohm rating of the Ara enable much more robust volumes to be played . . . truly a top rated set of bookshelf speakers.

SB acoustics Ara

If you’re like me, a person who was limited by space, life, and wife, who is limited to a bookshelf speaker and is wondering about this kit....buy now. I recently replaced a pair of KEF R3’s and can not believe the difference. Not that the kefs are lacking in many areas IMO but stepping into this speaker was a next level kind of thing. To be clear it delivered on what my expectations were. I have been long looking for a bookshelf that would make my face grin when played with volume. Set up with a Bruce Rozenblit designed valve amp for 4ohm speakers. They brought dimension and clarity to the room. Not sure any other way to describe it. Just a product that delivers beyond what I thought I paid for.
