Spec Sheet PDF

The Ziv II is a high performance kit using the Supreme SCW-636 woofer and the Supreme ST1048-BLK tweeter. A kit for the connoisseur, designed to showcase the wonderful detail of the Supreme drive units without sounding harsh or bright. The Ziv II has a very lifelike reproduction of vocals; the sound is clean and detailed with a large and deep soundstage. Bass is tight, controlled at all times displaying subtlety rather than a heavy ponderous sound that many speakers have. This kit includes two woofers, two tweeters, and two professionally assembled crossovers with your choice of series capacitor. You may wish to purchase the optional accessories package which includes all the various speaker building materials required for this project.

Recommended Cabinet

External dimensions of 15"H x 9"W x 8"D for 10.8 liters (0.38 cf3) internal volume, using 75mm (3/4") material, and single 2" x 6.5" vent using internal flare only, for F3 55 Hz. Sorry we do not have a dedicated cabinet drawing for this kit at this time.

Please Note: The port shown in the photo is our 2” flared port consisting of one flared end and 6.5” total length. Increase total length to 7” if you wish to use both flared ends for this tuning. Woofer below tweeter configuration and rear ported, behind the tweeter.

Morel graphs and port

Please note Kit includes pair of woofers, tweeters, and crossovers.

Since 1975, Morel has been on an ever-evolving quest to create the perfect, ultimate loudspeaker. This dedication is apparent in every product they produce: tweeters, midranges, woofers, and finished systems that serve the Hi-Fi, home theater, and car audio markets. Morel systems are today sold in more than 55 countries around the globe. Their products are made with exceptional care; each is assembled by hand and extensively tested, undergoing seven different quality assurance steps, to ensure only the highest standards are met.

The Ziv II is a 6" 2-way Kit for Hi-Fi Stereo or Home Theater. Cabinets are not included. Price listed is for a stereo pair of drivers and assembled premium crossovers. The Morel Supreme Series SCW636 woofer features a 16 mm long, 3" diameter Hexatech voice coil that provides plenty of deep bass punch, and a copper-covered pole piece design reduces inductance. Morel's Uniflow open frame virtually eliminates diaphragm back pressure and excursion noise.

Innovative engineering and an advanced approach to acoustic construction are the reason for Supreme Series tweeters' superior high performance. Their underhung voice coils move in a significantly higher magnetic field and remain there at all times during operation. As a result, the Morel Supreme tweeters provide more linear excursion, eliminate intermodulation distortion, reduce power compression at high levels, and considerably improve low frequency reproduction.

Ziv II Kit Includes 2x SCW-636 Carbon Fiber Woofers, 2x ST1048-BLK Supreme Tweeters, and 2x Assembled Crossovers built with premium audiophile components on sliver tinned copper circuit boards. Note: picture shows silver face plate tweeter - no longer available.

Ziv II Crossover

The crossover is 18db/octave on the bass and 12db/octave on the tweeter, with a deliberately mis-aligned Zobel network to adjust the tweeter response. Both drive units to be wired in phase. Madisound professionally assembled crossovers use Goertz Copper Foil 14 awg inductors for the woofer, ClarityCap PX polypropylene the parallel capacitors, a Mundorf MOX resistor, and your choice for the critical series tweeter cap. Clarity CSA is the default hi-pass capacitor for C2 (Mundorf shown in picture). The tweeter section is assembled on our 4.25" x 3.5" 149B PCB, and the woofer section on the 5.5" x 3.75" 64B PCB.

The Designer

Russell Kauffman, Technical Director and Head of Acoustic Design at Morel, has more than 30 years experience in the Hi Fi industry. He studied electronics before starting his career selling Hi-Fi for some of the most prestigious stores in the UK.

Over the years Russell has performed a number of roles for companies such as Wharfedale, Monitor Audio, and Bowers and Wilkins as well as operating as an independent acoustic designer.

His ”first love” however has always been the sound of Morel drivers which he believes to be special with qualities that cannot be described or quantified by spec sheets alone. In 2008 Russell was approached by Morel to perform the acoustic design of the Hi End statement loudspeaker the "Fat Lady”, which has since been the recipient of many design awards globally. It is also featured in “The Absolute Sound “ magazine issue 209.

Perfect Small Room Speakers

Reviewed by jkmann@gmail.com on 05/22/2024

These speakers produce audiophile clarity in a small speaker with an F3 somewhere around 55 Hz. The speakers have a natural tone with high clarity and detail. Vocals are beautiful, clear, and natural vocals; acoustic instruments sound live; and, bass is surprisingly adequate given the small box, and very crisp. Played at moderate volume in a small or medium sized room and I wouldn't wish for anything else.

There is always a tradeoff though. With a 6.5" driver trying to hit 55 Hz, you can't play them loud or you quickly get distortion as that little woofer tries to hit low notes beyond it's ability to move enough air. So, at low to moderate volumes, these speakers are brilliant. Try to make them play loud and they struggle.

A subwoofer will not solve this unless you put the Ziv II's behind a high-pass filter. They just aren't designed to play loud. Great for normal music listening and watching movies, not the right fit for the main speakers at a dance party or trying to recreate the live-music experience. I would not see the logic of building these speakers with the intention of adding a subwoofer ... but you do you.

I'm playing them now behind a Denon DRA-800H, (rated 120W at 6 ohms) and they max out in the mid 60's on the volume tab depending on the source material. So 80 watts is about all they can play before you get distortion.

I followed the box and vent recommendation, building a 12 liter box with a net interior volume of 11 liters, with the Mundorf Supreme EVO Oil capacitor option. The final speakers weigh 18 pounds each, so they are easily moved or transported.

If I was going to recommend any changes to the kit, I would try to find a heavier duty boards to put the crossovers components on. The inductors are pretty heavy and the SCW-636 is a very powerful driver. Also, there is a very narrow lip to mount the SCW-636, so I used #6 T-nuts instead of the provided wood screws. Build your box strong as even at moderate volume levels the SCW-636 has a kick.

Amazing speakers!

I don’t normally write reviews for purchased items, but the sheer level of impressiveness that these drivers deliver is amazing. I took on a slightly unusual project by using solid cocobolo for the cabinet (3Ž4 thick). I used the crossovers that the kit came with, along with the recommended lengths for the ports. The approximate volume of the cabinets was 1 cubic foot. I was expecting them to be pretty good as the drivers really weren’t cheap. They completely destroyed all expectations. In fact, they were so good, that I have them placed in a fairly large room by themselves. I use a Rotel amplifier to power them (120W per channel). No one believes me to start off with when I tell them that all the sound is only coming from these 2 speakers. Not only are they extremely crisp at loud volumes, the base is very deep, even, and precise. Who would have thought that this quality and level of sound could come out of these relatively small speakers. If I was to try and build the ultimate two way speakers again, I would use these exact same drivers
