The Loudspeakers

Scan-speak was founded in 1970 in Denmark - the birthplace of loudspeakers. Scan-speak has focused on developing, designing and manufacturing loudspeakers of the highest quality with their "no compromise" policy.

All Scan-speak drivers are hand built in their factory in Hoerning Denmark. Their focus has always been on quality of manufacture and quality of sound from beginning to end. For 40 years Scan-speak has worked on developing products to give the listener the optimum sound experience with minimal distortion and dissemination of the finest details.

Scan-speak's endeavor to create speakers with "true to life" sound experience has not gone unnoticed, as you can see their loudspeakers in high end systems worldwide.

The NADA kit uses all Scan-speak Illuminator drivers including the Beryllium dome D3004/6640 tweeter and the 18WU/4741T woofer. More on the drivers can be found below.

The Design

The NADA is a speaker kit designed by Klang + Ton magazine of Germany. The Illuminator D3004/6640 Beryllium dome tweeter is mated with the Illuminator 18WU/4741T 7" paper cone neo magnet woofer in a sealed box alignment. This is a kit design offered in the July 2011 issue of KLANG + TON magazine. The magazine is written in German and not available in other languages. Response Graphs

Frequency response of the NADA at 0 (on axis), 15, 30 and 45 degrees off axis. This is the response as you move away from the front of the speaker towards the side.

The response below is the summed response in green and then the woofer and tweeter individual responses in blue and red. The crossover frequency is a tad under 2500Hz.

The response below is the impedance curve in blue and the phase curve in red. Your amplifier will need to handle a 4 ohm impedance to properly drive this speaker system.

Crossover Schematic

The components are 6dB on the woofer and 18dB on the tweeter along with various corrective circuits.

The Crossovers

This combination of crossover parts is an excellent match to this design. The Madisound crossovers are professionally assembled on silver soldered copper circuit boards. We now use the Mundorf MCap Supreme EVO Oil capacitors along with Mundorf M-Resist Supreme resistors in the tweeter section. A Goertz 14awg copper foil inductor is used in series with the woofer. Solen fast caps are used in the parallel circuits. *Note: picture shows the Mundorf MCap Supreme caps, which are being phased out. All new crossovers are built with the new Supreme EVO's.

Here is a picture of the crossover wired up with Supra Classic and quick connects prior to installation in the Madisound pair of the NADA speakers. This is an example of how we wired up our speakers, the crossovers provided with the kit are not pre-wired. The woofer section gets mounted on the interior bottom and the the tweeter section on one of the interior side walls of the enclosure.

The High Frequency Transducer

The D3004/6640 Beryllium dome tweeter is one of Scan-Speak's finest creations. This tweeter has quickly become one of our favorites, and this is from folks who live in the candy store! Its performance really separates it from the pack. This tweeter excels through its entire frequency range and really separates itself from the pack. You might think that you can expect that from all tweeters, but it is actually difficult to achieve. The very high frequency reproduction is fantastic, as well as the clarity and detail of the lower frequencies. Although we all hate to admit it, we lose the ability to hear high frequencies as we age. A tweeter that really shines on the low end is a valuable asset, and this tweeter stands out.

The Low Frequency Transducer

The 18WU/4741T 7" woofer is part of the outstanding Illuminator line. Illuminator drivers were designed to take speaker design to a new level. These meticulously designed and tuned motor systems using Neodymium magnets are at the peak of their class. Everything has been done to reduce reflections and distortions to their lowest levels.

The Illuminator woofers are in every aspect unusual designs:

Wide open frame construction
Extremely long linear excursion and patented under-hung SD-3 Symmetrical Drive neodymium motor system, which due to copper caps and its construction ensures very low distortion
Unique patented cone
Low-loss linear suspension

The result is: “The Very Best Money Can Buy”!

A linear excursion of 9mm provides fantastic bass output for a 7" driver. The unique motor systems assures a very tight and responsive low end.

This curve shows the in box measurement of the woofer running full range (grey curve) and the woofer using the crossover (blue curve).

Here are the cabinet plans for those who wish to build their own. The magazine used 21mm Baltic Birch for the sides and back. They used 38mm solid wood butcher block for the front. Of course you can make your own box as long as you maintain the front panel dimensions and keep the volume around 0.95 cubic feet.

*Please note the cabinet drawing below shows a 109mm recess for the tweeter. The tweeter flange is actually 104mm. We recommend a tweeter recess of ~105mm, not 109mm. It is always best to test your recess cuts on scrap wood to ensure desired fit before making your final baffle cuts.*

You should consider downloading the magazine in pdf format so you can zoom into the cabinet pictures and drawings. The instrutions are in German, but with the help of Google translator you can make it happen. Payment was painless using Paypal.

*Note - Tweeter recess should not be 109mm as drawn below*

Ported Box Alignment

This cabinet size is also good for a vented box if you prefer more low end output. Using the 2FLARE - 2" dual flared port kit without the tube (ouside flare + connecting ring + inside flare), will provide the right length for an F3 of 39Hz. Should you build your enclosure larger or smaller than spec, contact us to calculate alternate port length for you. You can always seal the port again using a 2" plumber's plug if you decide to mate these speakers with a sub and/or prefer the gentle roll-off of a sealed aligment for certain listening situations. The port should be placed behind the tweeter, not behind the woofer.

Conclusion

Everything about this system speaks to quality and accuracy. The design, drivers, and crossover parts are all top of the line. This speaker is immediate, live and real. The NADA will provide realism to your recordings, something your mind will be comfortable with.

We provide you with the drivers, crossovers and a hookup diagram. You can use the cabinet drawing from this page. There is no instruction manual for this speaker system. You should have some prior experience with building loudspeakers kits before taking on this project.

This would be a good match to the B741 3-way kit we offer in a surround sound system.

I first reviewed these back in 2016 and liked them well enough with the addition of a single, fairly large, subwoofer crossing over at 60 hz. I have since built another pair of NADAs complemented with 2 Martin Login Dynamo 400 8" subwoofers L/R running full power, full range. The combination blends seamlessly giving as good sound as any pair of more expensive, full-range speakers I've heard.

The NADA are excellent speakers. I went with a ported design, and am very impressed with the low frequency response and smooth yet revealing midrange and treble. I credit the ScanSpeak drivers and the great job Madisound did on the crossovers. Other than the port, I followed the Klang + Ton design as closely as I could. The threaded bolts work well to dampen cabinet resonances. Be careful not to over tighten the bolts.

Imaging and tone are impressive. I have no need for a subwoofer even with the speakers four feet away from the rear and side walls. Once I got the tow-in about 15 degrees toward the listening position, the speakers essentially disappeared and presented a smooth, even soundstage with good width and depth.

This was a fun project that turned out even better than I expected. I highly recommend the NADA. Thank you Madisound!

Don't omit the beryllium tweeters!

This is really in response to another review written by someone who substituted a lesser tweeter. Don't substitute! The beryllium tweeters are crucial to providing the amazing clarity, subtle response of this system! Do your homework, read more about the qualities of beryllium in this and other flagship, state-of-the-art speakers! If you want to make changes, add another woofer and make this a 3-way!

This might seem odd but I am leaving a review for these without even trying them. Follow me though, I have the woofer, and a different tweeter. I have the D3004/6620-00 Tweeter which is about 1/2 the cost. Also I don't have anywhere near the crossover parts that this kit has, but am using clarity caps.

So why leave a review? I'll tell you; I went from a large three way system with two 10" woofers to something very close to this. I have never been happier. These little 7" woofers kick and the clarity is beyond any comparison. I have listened to lots of high end speakers, B&W, Focal, Golden Ear, you name it. These little things probably out shine any of the B&W's and Focals for clarity and sound stage. Of course they will not sound as full as the large three way systems, but they are bookshelf speakers. As far as other bookshelf speakers I don't of any that come close. The golden ear is just anemic and would not even consider. The scanspeak tweeters are so clear without being harsh and have an amazing off axis response. I have put them through every sort of music but really enjoying 2chellos right now. The warmth and impact is quite amazing with these.

I've been buying and building speakers for over 60 years...yes, I'm that old and can still hear! I built a pair of these about a year ago using the vent specs suggested by Madisound. Having lived with these for almost a year, I can honestly say these are among the best speakers I have heard, ever! I use them with a sub-woofer crossing over at 60hz so don't expect them to produce the bottom octave. But from about 40hz on up, they have plenty of bass and clean, punchy, undistorted sound throughout the audible range. They have an extra edge and impact, yet still sound smooth and natural. No disappointments. No looking for something more!
